LAWYERS IN A PANIC

A UK Barrister’s Chambers has distanced the majority of its members from a legal opinion written by Four of its lawyers that linked the Chinese government to genocide allegations after China imposed sanctions on the Four. This is the background. The UK government does not want to go to the brink with China and say publicly that China is committing genocide. Its “get-out” is to assert that a judgment about the existence of genocide must be made by a court. The ICC has drawn back from such a judgment so four barristers decided to state that China was committing genocide in the hope that this would be sufficient to get the UK government to go public. The move by the Four rebounded. China imposed sanctions and on 28 March the barrister’s chambers removed the reference to the legal opinion from its website. A few rows must have taken place! In my article China and the Uighurs, I have reviewed the evidence against China and concluded there is no genocide in China. But the real context for this is US-inspired efforts to stop China from becoming the biggest economic power in the world.
