CHINA’S PROGRESS ON SOCIAL ISSUES GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON #173

Zhang Meng a single mother received maternity insurance for her only child after a 4 year battle against the Shanghai City Government. Organisations promoting gay rights are allowed to reach out and a wife received compensation from her husband for years of providing in the home after he left for another woman. + don’t overlook the significant reduction in executions — down from 12,000 in 2012 to 2,000 in 2020. China is discarding some of its old puritanical policies. It recognises that they belong to the past. China is showing open minds + new thinking as China grows + becomes the top economic power in the next five years. There is another aspect of change. Today foreign companies can set up their own fully-owned subsidiaries in China — impossible 10 years ago. Taken together — what does it all mean. China may be authoritarian + will remain so with the Party in control but moving forward there will be growing relaxation of old fashioned ways as the leadership casts aside reactionary ways.
